WhatsApp Limiting Forwarded Messages To Slow Spread Of Fake News

by E-Editor

WhatsApp owners Facebook has taken the initiative to tighten security during the COVID-19 outbreak by limiting forwarded messages in an effort to curb the spread of fake messages.

According to The Guardian, the new update feature will cause users to have difficulty in forwarding messages that are flagged by WhatsApp as being forwarded too many times.

The mechanism in place will only allow messages which have been forwarded more than five times, to be sent onto a single chat at a time.

The move to limit forwarding capabilities came after a jump was witnessed at sharing unverified information via WhatsApp.

Calling it an ‘infodemic’ of misinformation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has pushed governments, authorities and urge social media companies to combat the problem.

Remember to verify your source of information first, before clicking on the forward button. The fight to stop this ‘infodemic’ begins with you.
